LITTLE RHINO'S DESIGN FOR THE MARKET VALUE COMPETITION
WINS PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD
Charlottesville Architect, Bob Anderson,
teamed up with five University of Virginia graduate students
to win the People's Choice Award in the "Market Value
Competition" hosted by the Charlottesville Community
Design Center (CCDC). The design competition sought innovative
solutions for the redevelopment of two city blocks in
downtown Charlottesville, south of the pedestrian mall.
The site, which currently hosts the City Market on Saturdays
throughout the spring, summer and early fall, contains
two of the most underdeveloped parcels in the city.
The Little Rhino team's winning design accommodated a
growing city market in a central plaza and along South
Street with two mid-rise mixed-use buildings. The buildings
consist of commercial space on the ground levels, one
to two levels of office space, a mix of condominium apartments
(ranging from luxury to affordable) and over 450 underground
parking spaces. The design provided innovative strategies
for harvesting solar energy and storm water management
and the team's alternative to the popular "green
roof" concept included a series of raised vegetable
gardens on the roof tops to serve the condo residents.
